• Golded, IBMPC, special characters

From Joachim Probst@2:240/6309 to All on Wed Mar 4 18:30:04 2020
    Hello everybody!

I lately recognise some mis-display of special characters (like the german Umlaute) when receiving a mail encoded with IBMPC as stated in the encoding kludge line.

Can anyone, maybe from within germany, who is operating with IBMPC character set send me a mail containing special characters? I would like to find out, if the problem is on my side or the encoding is wrongly noted.

Mails can go as netmail and do not need to be here in the group :)

    Thanks!
    Joachim

    Those people use wrong encoding.
IBMPC does not inclide german umlauts.

Here are some UTF-8 Umlauts for you ÄÖÜäöüß

If you need them also in LATIN-1 encoding drop me an email, and I send you an answer back in LATIN-1.

Sorry ... had the wrong config.
I wrongly marked the message as latin-1 should have been utf-8

This one should be correct now

Ah OK ... then Gossiped translates LATIN-1 correctly.
    Then I provided both LATIN-1 and UTF-8 Testmessages ;)

The issue is I had it configured to use LATIN-1 if not told otherwise, and I forgot about it.
Then I changed the configfile in the wrong location. (gossiped changed the location, and I forgot that ...)

    Thanx for the feedback!

Yes, it does. IBMPC is an obsolete identifier and was used for different European charactersets. For umlauts it sholdn't make much of a difference, they
are at the same position in CP437 (US) and CP850 (Latin 1, DOS default for German).

I think so, yes, but IBMPC should default to CP437 and that contains Umlauts.

Thanks for your mails, I can now say, LATIN-1 goes fine, UTF-8 gets scrambled in my GoldEd. So I have to take a closer look into that part.

IBMPC was indeed originally meant to be CP437. But somehow it evolved to mean ANY IBM PC codepage and so another kludge was introduced as an addendum. The CODEPAGE kludge.
All that is deprecated. The correct wat to indicate the encoding is the CHRS kludge.

As far as i remember golded can't handle multibyte charsets.

But golded can envoke/start an external editor to work with the message body.

It was said that adding multibyte support to golded is like rewriting the code from scratch.

I would be interested as well... I see kludge UTF8, which I guess is linked with XLAT tables?

For example here - in .42 conferences we use very old coding CP895. To be able to even read/and write that in Golded, I use XLAT between them...

    So my shell is like:

    LANG=en_US.utf8

How I run golded (to achieve LATIN-2 within UTF8):

    luit -encoding 'ISO-8859-2' ./gedlnx -f

and how CFG is setup to handle CP895 (these .chs I have long time already)

    XLATPATH /home/.../golded/xlat
    XLATCHARSET CP895 LATIN-2 kam_il2.chs
    XLATCHARSET LATIN-2 CP895 il2_kam.chs
    XLATIMPORT CP895
    XLATEXPORT CP895
    XLATLOCALSET LATIN-2

It would be interesting to skip that LATIN-2 hop-

(But I dont use Czech in INT echo, of course...)

How about pressing ALT-i and check the Bytes of the suspicious characters?
Then compare them to the charset definitions.

The screen scrambled problem shows up in quoted mails on my system but to be honest, i have no idea if my charset setting is correct. I haven't touched the charset files for years.

Can you give any tips or links on how to train Golded for

As said before, attach an external utf-8 capable editor via
    function key into golded.

That is one way but not the only way.

This message was written with Golded's internal editor. For just accents and umlauts it works.

    á é í ó ú ä ë ï ö ü

For Cyrillic I use Winvi as external editor.

Hmmm... I'd say it is easier to configure, but harder to use.

I plan to write a Fidonews article on the subject. But it will take a bit of time, so please have patience.
