The thing is, if you have a bad connection, you have no idea where they are in that rotation. I don't check into that net when that person is net control.

Not quite sure what your saying (must be a bad connection :D ) but if your referring heavy QRM/N, it doesn't matter what format the net's using, it falls to NC to decide who's next.

If your referring to joining a round-robin net after its begun, NC'll add you to the end of the list and let you in soon as it gets to you.

What happens is that the node drops out...although I've been on
nets where the station dropped out due to battery failure, or they
were accessing the app on their smartphone, and a call came in.

The thing that irks me though, is that many of them are a bunch
of impatient net-hoppers. They feel it's a crime or mortal sin if
they miss checking into a net...so they have to try to check into
every net in existence that day or evening. These are what I call
    "Hi, Bye, and QSY checkins".

That's a supposition, but I do see a lot of "Hi, bye"s on traffic nets. I never got that. If you don't have any traffic, why check in? I've heard TNs that get maybe 10 check-ins, and nobody has traffic, so the net ends. There's 10 min. wasted.
