Hope this is an ok place to put this.

HUGE Thanks to Basis for sending the messages for me!

Thank you, Paulie!! There was a HUGE area-wide AT&T outage in my area. We lost fiber internet and cell phone service, too.
I assume their backhaul went out since we also lost cell coverage.

    All systems back online! =:-)

I've wanted to go AT&T fiber to get symmetric service, but we're all
fed from overhead poles. I'm on a dead-end cul de sac, and power poles
    alternate sides of the street.

Walking my dog yesterday, I saw 2 fiber house runs on my block knocked
down by a moving truck - when you have to cross a street and run
diagonally to get to the house, the amount of sag in the cable makes it
susceptible to being snagged by high trucks.

AT&T finally solved my next-door neighbor's recurring cable cuts by
throwing the AT&T fiber over the Comcast cable on the pole, giving it
about a foot more height running to the house. It's all fine until
friction wears through the cable jacket, but that'll be someone else's
    problem.

Yeah, sounds like it was a biggie. I work from home, too. I have
Xfinity, and have gotten used to once a week having to power-cycle my
router. I have a deal for the next 12 months due to a billing issue of
theirs, we''ll see what happens at the end of it. I'm paying $120/month
for phone, internet and cable with a DVR now.

I'm working with Comcast on a deal for my offices at work, accidentally
called them Xfinity. They were quick to correct me that they're a
    different organization. :)

I don't use AT&T's copper coming into the house any more, it looks like
I've got a little bit more clearance than my neighbors from how their
copper runs. I'd need to figure out how to get from the top of my roof

    to try it out.

Yeah so you get it! Working from home we gotta have the internet!!

As much as a PITA as it was, 1 time in almost 5 years I really can't complain. We found out it was from the consturction crew (road work - lane widening) being done next to our neighborhood and an excavator knocked a pole over.

So technically, not even AT&T fault. Hope you find something that works well!

I have been very happy with the AT&T fiber.

Is/was it an actual STATIC IP that you pay specifically for? Otherwise, it could just be a dynamic IP that rarely ever changes, unless the hardware does.

I have Spectrum cable internet with a dynamic IP - as I don't pay specifically for a static one (which I assume would only be available via a "business class" tier. If I don't change my modem or router, or there isn't any huge cable outages in the area (recently they upgraded coax to fiber - which caused a change in my IP), my IP address always stays the same. I believe it has only changed like twice in the past 10 years.

Meh.. :/ That sucks. I used to use Comcast/Xfinity but switched to fiber internet service once I moved to a place where that was available (it was Frontier Fiber at the time, and it has been Ziply Fiber since 2020).

When I had Comcast/Xfinity, I had internet service and a basic cable TV package - I only got the basic TV package because I assumed my over-the-air TV reception might not be very good where I was living. Eventually, I tried an over-the-air antenna and found that the reception was actually pretty good. And a silly thing about Comcast's basic TV service is that the box they sent me was outputting a standard-definition, square picture on the TV, whereas I'd get a HD widescreen image over the air. One of the shows I like to watch sometimes is Jeopardy, and with their box outputting a square picture, it would cut off the left & right sides, so some things were misisng from the picture (along with it not looking great because it was SD). I called Comcast to remove my basic TV service and just keep internet, but they said my bill would increase if I did that.. So I just unplugged the TV box and put it away until I canceled my Comcast service.

I think you're near the Portland, OR area? If so, maybe look into Ziply Fiber. I think their service has been pretty good, although a while ago I heard they were basically acquired by Bell Canada, and since then there have been some weird billing stuff.. But otherwise I've been happy with them, and their internet service has been very good. One advantage of fiber is that you get the same speed for both download and upload, which is a benefit if you're running servers (which I know you are, for your BBS & such).

I believe Ziply Fiber has options for a static IP too if you need one, though I'm not sure if that would bump you into a business tier and might cost more.

If your "inside" network is consistent and static, but your "outside" network is dynamic, then anybody else who has (direct) access to your "inside" network are not affected by "outside" forces :)

Hopefully too you can reduce the blast radius when an outside event happens...

Xfinity FECKED me today - changed my 5 year static IP to something new, screwing up ALL my public facing projects... sorry for 2oFB users trying to login, techheart.life posts and 20forbeers.com website and TELNET Second Reality users. SUCK.

Sorry to politely disagree, but find this to sound exaggerated. And perhaps if you want to avoid problems you should consider paying for an enterprise-grade ISP with an SLA and not have these amateur-hour problems. Surely you can afford a dedicated circuit with all the donations you claim to receive?

I run nearly an identical setup with Windows servers and domain controllers, never once had any DNS or public-facing changes taking any longer than a few minutes. Wasn't a blip on anyones radar, and this runs a Fidonet zone with hundreds of connections per day. Nobody cares and I do not care if they did.

"hundreds of connections a day" is like saying "i own a business" and then showing off your lemonade stand

nice "look at me!" hardware gloat though

Many hosts that routinely poll here several dozens of times per day equalling hundreds of incoming connections, which is what you doubted.

I answered you promptly and factually and you want to be a techno-dick.

Hilarious... Are you related to Professor Jas Hud?

Correct, not much "what" is transferred, hence my phrase about me "not caring" although noise would be made by some if the content ever stopped flowing. The noise level can be measured by the size of one's rainbow-colored suspenders.

Its not entirely for my own amusement and certainly not for any recognition. I don't need or even accept donations. Some longtime friends were made over the years by trading silly Netmails back 'n forth... good enough for me.

But there are a few unrelated paying-customer projects I ended up that required spending on decent hardware and Internet... BBS stuff is all trivial.
