I have (I think I have) setup my mailer here to honour file requests but
I am not sure that it works. If any of you have the ability to send a
file request can you try to send one to my node and let me know if it works as expected.

You create a *.req file with the address of the system in hex, then in that file is a list of files you want from the remote system.
If everyting is working, when your system sends that file, the remote system should send you the files you asked for.

It was very much a thing back in the day of dial-up modems.

Yes, and there were a lot of tools around for easily generating FREQs. :)
