    Well we all have 3-5 meals we can rely on and will go to for an easy feed.

    For me (these are so called dad meals) they would include

    1. Spaghetti Bolognese
    2. Mashed spud, mixed veges and an oven pie
    3. Pork and apple schnitzels with accompanying veggies
    4. Home made Pizza!
    5. ... I'm all tapped out now. Ha!

    Funny, I was just getting ready to comment on #5 ... I wondered how your home version compared? This is one of my all time favorites and

    Here in New Zealand, fish and chip takeaways are all over the place and I
    would say it is one of the oldest forms of takeaways that we have, well
    before KFC and then McDonalds and all the others F&C have ruled the roost and still have a strong support base amongst Kiwis..

    When we opt for a home version it's oven fries and crumbed fish in the oven
    on fan bake. They are tasty enough and less greasy than if we bought them.

    It would be fun to compare what you can but from your F&C shops over there. i.e. other menu items... and what is popular between our countries.

    The whole deal is the mess, having to fill the deep fryer, deep frying the fish
    and the chips and then having to clean everything up... Beyond that I have a good batter recipe so that is half the battle. Plus there is a place not to far
    away from us the not only has excellent fish and chips but also a first rate ginger beer. (They have been in business for close to 50 years.)

    That is so true. Salmon is good stuff, but it is not fish & chips.

    In town here haddock is what we get although you can order cod or halibut for an extra $5 or so.

    In my region of the states, we called it ginger-ale and mostly refered to Canada-Dry or, sometimes, Schwepps (sp?!) Ginger Ale. It seems like as the hipsters took over (just joking... sorta), I started seeing Ginger Beer in
    the health-food shops and it tasted very similarly, except stronger ginger flavour - perhaps.

    I say this, but then again, in my region of 'Hobbiton', I think we called everything 'Coke' as well.... heh - much simpler times.

    I can tell you what I did last Saturday, as what was suposed to be a quiet
    meal for the two of us attracted four additional once the word got out.

    Main entre was Spiessbraten which is a seasoned rolled pork loin, which as I
    do not have the traditional Spiessbraten swinging frame like you will see it cooked in the Idar Oberstein area of Germany, was done on a pellet grill -
    the wood smoke and indirect heat take it to another level.

    Sides were a spring harvest salad, everything picked locally in the prior few days, dressed with the very simply oil and vinigar with a bit of honey added sort of spring dressing. Mushroom gnocchi substituted for the more
    traditional spaetzle, as I wanted to bring in the mushroom flavor. Afters
    was a rubarb & kumquat crumble.

    It wasn't quite nice enough to serve outside, but we did have an outstanding showing of different birds at the feeders which impressed the group.

    Next weekend is likely to see Saturday away on an Island out in Lake
    Michigan, and if things work out I intend to a brisket on the smoker pellet grill we have there, which will run for some 7-8 hours cooking. Sides will depend on what is avaialable at the island's Farmers Market. Several year round and full season Island resident friends have said they will be there.

    Always room for more!

    Ginger Beer is much more ginger-flavored than ginger-ale

    Neither is alcoholic typically as found on the supermarket shelves.

    Stateside you can get a stronger flavored Ginger Beer at Costco (and other places) called Bundaberg (Australian made).

    I think they actually "brew" theirs, and most is just flavored soda pop.

    There are some craft brewers of traditional brewed Ginger Beer, but I think they are mostly regionals.

    Root Beer is something different.

    Interestingly it was originally made from bark rather than roots.

    I have made a Root Beer Tincture which I later use to flavor Kombucha. I
    have the recipie in my Kombucha notebook.

    While many Europeans think Root Beer is odd tasting, the British do Dandelion and Burdock soft drinks that are not so very different.

    Scots do them one up and do Irn-Bru which is flavored with Ammonium Ferric Citrate and very synthetic tasting. I'd say it really shouldn't be in the brewed plant based drinks, but some folks lump it together.

    I am sure there are others!

    I was under the impression Ginger Beer and Ginger ale were two different
    types of bev.

    A little googling tells me that GB is fermented and brewed, and GA is carbonated water with ginger flavoring.

    No, they are more of a "soda" or what we call "soft drink". Ginger beer differs






    from Ginger Ale in that it is spicier and more robust. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginger_beer Here in Michigan we have a very good






    Ginger Ale called Vernor's that is aged giving it a distinct taste. Yes it interesting how names of beverages differ between countries and even between states/provinces/territories.

    I enjoy a bit of cooking from time to time. I even get decent results, most
    of the time, which confuses me, because I'm not very good at most things, but I'll own it. But simple go-to things that I don't have to think about much
    and usually earn reasonable praise are:

    1. Beef Stroganoff
    2. Shepherds pie/chicken, leek and sweetcorn pie
    3. Chicken Tikka masala or other Indian/Thai curry
    4. Chicken/Mushroom Risotto (that's a signature dish).
    5. Probably other simple things like mac and cheese with bacon bits, idk.

    Don't get me started on deep frying shit! Back in the homeland of Scotland,
    the top deep fried items are:
    1. Fish and chips.
    2. Pizza
    3. Pie (Scotch pie)
    4. Haggis
    5. Black pudding
    6. White Pudding
    7. Jumbo Sausage
    8. King Rib (not what you think it is...)
    9. Ice Cream
