• BBS <> XMPP Chat Bridge Door

From Goose@21:1/177 to ALL on Sat Oct 31 11:17:28 2026
    Hi all,

GooseNet BBS now has a small chat door that links the BBS with an XMPP group chat room.

How it works: a Python door (slixmpp) starts from a Mystic menu as a DOOR32 door. It joins [bbs@conference.g00r00.com](mailto:bbs@conference.g00r00.com) on our own Prosody server. BBS callers show up there as "<handle> [BBS]", and anything written in the room appears live in the door, in Nostromo green on an 80x25 screen.

The room has no archive. Only the last 20 messages stay in server memory. Users from other XMPP servers can join as well.

It's still in testing, so feedback is welcome!

    Cheers
    Goose

I'm glad to see Jabber/xmpp getting some love these days.
Matrix/Discord seem way too heavy for most chat needs.

I was a big fan back in the early Skype for Business days - we could
federate with Jabber, authenticate with AD and use Jabber as a platform
for third parties while we used SfB internally.

    Hi poindexter,

thanks! Same here - XMPP is light, open and federated, which makes it a nice fit for BBS folks.

On g00r00.com I run my own small XMPP server and I've linked it to GooseNet BBS. The BBS chat door and the XMPP room [bbs@conference.g00r00.com](mailto:bbs@conference.g00r00.com) are the same conversation: callers on the BBS show up as "Name [BBS]", people joining via XMPP as "Name [XMPP]".

Because the server is federated, anyone with an account on any XMPP server can join the room - no account on my side needed. It's a different kind of BBS communication: real-time chat that reaches beyond the board, while echomail stays the place for longer discussions.

If you have an XMPP client handy, feel free to drop by and say hello.

    Cheers
    Goose

... "I am" is the shortest sentence in English. Is 'I do' the longest?

This sounds awesome, will have to check it out. I keep a prosody server running as well.
