Honestly not sure if this one will happen or not?
Given that the COVID situation is worsening in Japan, one wonders whether public health or corporate interests will win out. Sure,
I love the Olympics, especially the track events, but is it
realistic for the games to run this time around?
No, it is not. They should be cancelled.
Well I dunno if that's going to happen. There's a lot of money there, so what *should* happen and what *will* happen may be two entirely different things, but in the meantime, we can all take care ourselves to be safe irrespective
of what's going on elsewhere.... or rather, we can try our best to remain
safe.
Yes, it's especially hard on the elite athletes, who put
everything into it.
Yep, it surely sucks for them. Some will be too old to be elite in four years. Sadly, it's reality, and in the Big Picture of things, the Olympic Games are not really very important.
It's happened twice before. Carter Pulled the plug on the Olympics in Russia and then they in turn did the same to us the next time around. That's not a cancellation in it's entirety, but during that era, it seemed, as far as the media coverage's narrative of the events was concerned, that it was just the
US and Russia that mattered as far as tally's of medals were counted.
Of course, the games did go on, but without one nation one time around and
then another the next time around, and honestly, it was less fair to the athletes of all the world when those two games occured than it would be to cancel the entire Olympics due to the SARS we're dealing with now...
And it made each of those two nations appear to be exceedingly petty, since they boycotted due to political reasons and retaliation for being boycotted, and that's not what the games are about at all - they're a celebration of the human spirit, not a political mantlepiece.
