I've started watching films that were directed by Sam Peckinpah after
watching a 70's movie the other night on the streaming service called Pluto
TV.

The film was called The Killer Elite and it's a a rather slow and slightly
gory flick with a limited plot. So after watching that I opted to look for
some of his other films. I then watched the movie Convoy which was no where as good as Smokey and the Bandit. I guess because it didn't have the humor of
the Burt Reynolds film but also because the cop played by Ernest Borgnine was just plain mean to the truckers.

I've found the movies show their age with respect to the way women are
treated and portrayed. Times have moved on and I think for the better. Time
has moved on for the actors too. The lead actress in Convoy is now 82 while
the lead actor (Kris Kristofferson) is 85 ... Wikipedia tells me the guy was married three times and has eight kids - yipes :)

I tried to watch Convoy last year and ended up turning it off for much of the same reasons. I'd watched (well, re-watched) Smokey and the Bandit with my teenage son and was checking out Convoy (without him) and just couldn't get into it. Some things just don't hold up.

No I agree it was a painful watch but I persevered because after watching 70% of it I wanted to know how bad it got... it did get worse :)
