    This is sort of a BBS modding topic..

    I want to carry Fidonet, but my domain name is clearly not Fido-appropriate. (compufuck.xyz) The hub coordinator said the problem is putting compufuck.xyz a my Bink address on the nodelist, which is understandable.

    To get around it, he suggested dyndns, so my BinkD address could be like compubbs.dyndns.net or something like that. This fido dude has an account with dyndns, so he was going to get me set up for free.

    So it's nice of him to offer to do that for me and everything, but I didn't go through with it because I'm confused about something: he said he would need my BBS server's IP address, which I couldn't give him because my server is a VPS and the company doesn't offer a static IP. I could give the dude my IP, but it will change.

    I don't quite get why he would need the IP though - if he owns compubbs.dyndns.org, then couldn't he just forward all traffic for that
    domain to compufuck.xyz, end of story?

    I didn't want to argue with someone who was trying to do me a favor, and probably knows his shit better than me.

    Am I right though? Or - alternatively, is there some other way I could mask my domain just for bink?

    He would need your IP address now and every time it changes in order to keep the DNS record up to date. Perhaps he was assuming you have a static IP and that he would only need it one time. I don't think he needs it for any fido-specific reason.

    I have no idea what the landscape is for dynamic DNS providers these days, but surely you could just set that up and manage it for yourself rather than through this guy (assuming there are still free offerings out there; do *not* pay money purely for the sake of joining fidonet ... what a waste that would be).

    He'd need to IP, I believe, in order to forward through dynDNS. Then you'd
    need to run the client program to keep it in synch (e.g. ddclient).

    Another (not-free, however) option is through Google Domains, which offers dynamic DNS right through their DNS config -- you'd need to buy a $9
    USD/year domain but you could then map an alternate TLD (e.g.
    yourdomain.com). It uses the same dyndns2 protocol as dynDNS, so you can run the ddclient program (which is available on Windows and Linux) to keep it updated with whatever your current dynamic IP is.

    I could just give you a CNAME of compuf.scinet-ftn.org and point it to your current domain. You could then use that for Fidonet.

    Just setup dydns yourself at duckdns.org (or another site) with the domain you select and uses that for nodelists.

    I know the SysOp you are referring to. He DOES NOT "know his shit". He's just a FIDO coordinator with a Big Head. Stay away from him. Better yet stay away from FIDONET period!

    Did not know about this...but at $9.00 per year per domain...that's not bad
    at all. Just bought Warcraft I/II from GOG for $13.00...so the price would be perfect for over here.

    Just gotta see if I can find an OS/2 dyndns2 client to run it with the BBS on the Lenovo. If I can...will be doing this route.

    Looked at my CenturyLink DSL modem under Dynamic DNS. Had forgotten that I
    had it setup already for No-IP & was actually updating it. Under another heading...listed DynDNS as another option. If I choose this option...the
    modem would do the dirty work...no matter what OS I was running. Am I
    correct?

    Getting my BBS on Fidonet is like a rite of passage for me. I'm proud to
    be on Scinet, but now I'm addicted and want more! I never could get this stuff to work when I was a kid but now Mystic makes it easier than ever.

    I get what you're saying too. The dude just needed to redirect whatever domain to my domain, but as a beggar I can't be a chooser.
