For the past 10 years or so I've dug Mystic. I ran Synchronet for a while, but funny enough, I wasn't a huge fan of all the "Internet" services added. I'm a bit of a purist that way. I don't mind nntp for reading or ftp for grabbing files but that is as far as I would go.
I actually ran Renegade for a short while in 93. It was before I found, and started running Proboard.
Searchlight had a pretty good web interface, but yes, not for purists.

I love TBBS and MajorBBS for the gaming. TBBS had a cool game, bandwarz or something like that, and I've been unsuccessfully trying to track it down so I can write a clone.
I tried standing up a MajorBBS game server for a while in a linux VM but it was too temperamental.

I get that this is a niche hobby and all, but making system resources available via the web kinda kills the whole feel, It is totally possible to make a forum look like a BBS, but you miss out on the experience.

Yep, and therein be the rub (according to the Bard). I host everything in a cloud VM, and nested virtualization isn't really a thing, sadly. At least no for running a DOS VM :)

Time. I was halfway getting it to work; got stuck on the amount of
memory being used in 640k that it did not leave enough for D'Bridge to

I am really intrigued by mystic. Started with it on the pi but soon felt like Linux wasnt the place to be with the doors I wanted to run so I dusted off an old 755 with Server 2003 on it. My dev box is 2003 on a virtualbox.
Yeah, I thought about doing that. My good friend is a security analyst and *nix guru for the us goobermint. We talked about it for sometime
and I eventually talked him (back) into DOS so he shutdown his Ubuntu board. Hey! I should draft bobby into SciNet.

Kinda jumping into this thread late but:
I ran Spitfire in the 90s. Tried many others, PCBoard (primarily because lots of warez boards were running it), RBBS, Wildcat!, etc. Always liked th feel of Spitfire so stuck with it. I was part of DarkStar BBS development s I ran it for a few years in the office.
I started my BBS decades ago using a few of those, but went full-force with Spitfire (as a dial-up).
A decade or two later, and I was able to locate WildCat! which allowed multi-nodes easier and you could add a package to allow Internet Telnet. Fast forward to more recently, and I came across Mystic!
I enjoy it tremendously as it is very easy to setup and allows Telnet with today's technology. And, ... here I am :)
Thats good to hear, although I must admit, I do not remember the original message of mine you are referring to.
I was a huge fan of Searchlight and TBBS, but stuck with Renegade through thick and thin.
When I finally was able to obtain the source code, and when I saw the dissappointing direction the developers of Renegade were taking things at the time, I made a painful decision to go about things "on my own" and essentially
remained on a specific build of Renegade, refusing to upgrade.
That was 2003, 2004 I believe; and 15 some odd years later, I maintain all aspects of my Renegade system on my own. Any bugs, I have to fix myself.

I love sifting through the Renegade code, and finding a line that sets X to equal one. Then the very next line, checks to see if in fact X equals one.

variable to something, next I will make sure that I actually set it.
Then you print it to the screen, just as a verification. :)
