Are there too many variables to have everyone view a BBS message the same? There are individual BBS settings. How messages are transfered between BBS networks. I've always enjoyed the ANSI graphics part of the BBS scene but now I'm seeing many BBSers either don't like them or just prefer to block them or strip the ansi codes out. That said does that
mean ascii is going to be the BBS standard? Is Ansi obsolete?HusTler
Its not really any different than it always has been. If anything the ANSI/BBS modding scene is much more intertwined with the
"PD" BBS scene these days. Back in the day there was always animosity from some "PD" BBS users towards the ANSI art scene and in turn the art scene would filter out problematic people. We were called "elitests" because if you were a grumpy disrespectful asshole chances are you'd get blacklisted, and those grumpy people didn't like that outcome.
You'd think we would have evolved past that, but there are still some people who have that animosity just like they did in 1994.
As far as ANSI in messages specifically, there aren't a lot of softwares (maybe just Enigma?) that supports ANSI in messages and file descriptions in the same way that Mystic does, where you can incorporate ANSI art directly in your messages when you are creating them. Some software can't display messages properly with ANSI embedded into them, and some of those softwares are used by those grumpy people. Grumpy people get grumpy when their software can't read ANSI and you post messages with ANSI!
TLDR: Some people are just not happy unless they're angry and miserable. ;)
ANSI isn't going anywhere, although ASCII art is cool too!
