I spent Friday at Fan Expo here in Toronto with my 12 year old son, a friend of his and a friend of mine.
For those that don't know what Fan Expo is, it's a massive Comics, Gaming, Horror, Sci-Fi and Anime conference here in Toronto (This ComiCon, but in Canada). It's that largest con of it's type in Canada
and the 3rd largest in North America (only behind ComiCon in San Diego and NY Comic Con). They had some 300,000 people go through the past 4 days.
I am amazed at how popular D&D has become again and I also forgot how much fun sitting at a table playing through a campaign is. I am also
glad that he is doing something other than playing on his X-Box one or using his iPhone.

Dude, would you believe I've never played D&D? I may lack the patience haha.

Patience is definitely a must. When I was younger, we would play campaigns that took us months to finish.
I've never even finished GTA V because I got bored and just go kill hookers.

Friday playing through the included campaign and this morning I went to
my Mom's place to pick up all my old campaigns and D&D accoutrement. We spent about 6 hours today playing through an old classic campaign, The Sunless Citadel with an additional 2 friends.

A great time was had by all. One of the dads and I were talking and considered bringing our characters out to teach them a thing or two. I
had a 32nd level Paladin when I played in high school, he mentioned a Magic User about the same level...

Maybe you should join one of our campaigns remotely using roll20.net.

I've had to DM for them, as that is what I use to do as a kid. The 5th edition rules are quite a bit different to the old AD&D rules I was use to. Once I got my feet, a good time was had by all.
I've never been to a 'big' comic con, but have been to some local shows and ALWAYS had a good time! Have been to Gencon twice as well. Next weekend is a local toy/hobby/comic show in Memphis I'm hoping to hit...
Yeah - we don't get together in person much anymore, but we still play 'pencil and paper,' we just use PDF's now and we use Slack to play as
much as possible. For over 3 years we were getting together weekly to
use roll20 to play. This works for us because the closest two players
are to each other are me and Chris, and that's a 30 minute drive. The other three? One 2 hours away, one in Florida and one in Indy... No way
we could get together 'live' any more than once or twice a year...
Takes patience, sure, cause it can be slow at times, but it REALLY takes imagination. :-)
If you're having fun, you're doing it right! :-)
I think the rules take a back seat to gameplay ANY day of the week! :-)

Big ones are great for what they are, big ass events where you get to
meet new people and see things you would otherwise never see. Although,
I prefer smaller events. You tend to find better deals there. We hold a yearly "World of Commodore" event just outside Toronto, you get many 100-150 come through but you end up getting great deals on products.
I started to use Roll20 with some friends a few months ago, those that aren't within driving distance and we have a great time. In person is always better, but sometimes you have to take what you can.

It's also a great social tool. Great time have been had around a table with some dice.

The first few campaigns with the kids we winged a lot of it. I didn't
want to inundate them with some of the more complex aspects like second strikes and the such. But as they are now running their own campaigns
and get together once or twice a month to do so here at our place, they have started to be a bit more stringent with the rules.
