Oh yeah I knew that, I just stumbled down that performance path as we
were talking about things so I thought I'd pass it along.
Normally the gaming community has massive meltdowns about things that aren't even real or massively exaggerated, but this time it seems there are actual legit reasons for people to be upset.
Yeah, definitely. You set me down that path after reading your post, so I've read and watched a lot more on the subject since then, and yeah, it's pretty fucking bad. Beyond that, it seems like memes around the performance have surpassed those around bugs in the last couple of days.
I do think its par for the course that "crossover generation" games run not-so-great on the last generation hardware though. Last generation
had some AAA games like GTA5 that didn't run so well on PS3 but were
great on PS4. This will be one of those games.
Agreed. Perhaps the backlash is partly due to how smooth the generational transition has been, especially on the Xbox side. People weren't expecting their old boxes to be suddenly turned into potatoes the moment the PS5 and Series X|S launched. Still, there were a few games before this that were targeted at PS4 Pros and Xbox One Xs and ran relatively poorly on base PS4s
or Xbox Ones, so I guess it's just buyer beware all the way around. Yet
another reason not to preorder games. :)
Digital Foundry also said they have a 3090 RTX system running it sub 60 frames so its capable of defeating any hardware you throw at it if you keep moving up the settings. Getting something like that to run on 7
year old systems that were already "underpowered" in 2013 must be nearly impossible.
Someone transcribed an "emergency" shareholder call they had yesterday and one of the telling statements CDPR made was that they simply didn't spend much
time on optimizing or testing the last generation consoles. It sounds like
they got the PC version reasonably close to where they wanted it and pulled
the trigger. I'm sure thats vastly oversimplifying the situation, but these
are their words, not mine. :P
I think I am one of those too except for a few small situations. I
bought Final Fantasy VII Remake on day 1 because I had that nostalgia
from playing it when I was a teenager. Other than that, the last game I can remember anticipating on release day was Mass Effect Andromeda. I just googled and that was early 2017!
Yeah, I do occasionally grab brand new games, especially when I get hyped to play games with other people (online shooters, MMOs, etc.) but I go in and
out of online gaming so that's not always a thing. Right now, for instance,
I'm not really doing any regular gaming with friends and my last big group has gone their separate ways.
Argh, so how'd anticipating Andromeda work out for you? :P
Are there any upcoming games you're really interested in? I've been out of the loop lately so there isn't anything on my radar at the moment,
but I am looking forward to checking out No Man's Sky a bit more during
my vacation (I usually take the last week of December off).
I try not to invest myself too heavily in bullshit hype cycles these days because that so often leads to disappointment. Probably my most hotly anticipated game at the moment is Halo Infinite. That game has also had a rocky development but, like with Cyberpunk, even if it launches broken I can rest assured that it'll eventually be completely fixed. It doesn't hurt that I'll get it for "free" with Game Pass.
I mean, there's a lot of odd ball things I want to play (like No Man's Sky)
and curiosities, like the upcoming Yakuza Remaster Collection.
There's a lot of older games on my hit list right now - I'm going to be
playing through Halo Wars soon, which I never played, and I've been in the
mood for an RTS. I also want to go back and play some old DOS era RTSes, perhaps starting with Dune II. I'm still slowly playing through Star Wars: Squadrons and excited to start (trying) to play it online. Most likely I'll just get destroyed and move on to another game with my tail between my legs, but I really enjoy the single player so far. All of this Cyberpunk 2077 talk has had me wanting to go back and play Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mankind Divided neither of which I ever got around to. I've also been wanting to play through all of the Metal Gear Solid games since I've never play much of any
of them, but I had a lot of friends who go insane over that series. I also wanted to go check out Darksiders - I've been wanting to play something like that for a while now.
Too many games, not anywhere close to the free time to play them.
